Cristiano Ronaldo tests positive for coronavirus

Cristiano Ronaldo was found positive for coronavirus, the Portuguese soccer federation said Tuesday.

The federation said Ronaldo was doing fine and didn’t have any symptoms. It didn’t mention when he first tested positive.

Here’s the official statement from the PFF:

Cristiano Ronaldo was released from national team duties after a positive test for COVID-19; he will not face Sweden.

The Portuguese international is doing well, without symptoms, and in isolation.

Following the positive case, the remaining players underwent new tests this Tuesday morning, all with a negative result, and are available to Fernando Santos for training this afternoon, in Cidade do Futebol.

The game, counting for the qualification phase of the League of Nations, is scheduled for Wednesday in Alvalade.

Ronaldo played the 0-0 draw against France in the League of Nations on Sunday and the 0-0 draw against Spain in a friendly match last week.

Cristiano Ronaldo was welcomed by a number of French players, including PSG star Kylian Mbappe, Manchester United forward Anthony Martial, Manchester United centerman Paul Pogba, Real Madrid defenseman Raphael Varane and more. He also exchanged shirts with young French talent, Eduardo Camavinga, after the match.

Cristiano Ronaldo is in isolation and was dropped from the League of Nations match against Sweden on Wednesday in Lisbon.

On Monday, the forward Juventus posted a photo on Twitter showing him and the rest of the Portuguese squad enjoying a meal together. The players were all next to each other at a table, with Ronaldo obviously taking a picture of himself at the front end.

Along with the tweet, Ronaldo wrote, in Portuguese, “United on and off the field!”

Key facts of Cristiano Ronaldo positive with coronavirus:

  • The diagnosis means that the star forward will miss Portugal’s UEFA Nation’s League game against Sweden on Wednesday.
  • Cristiano Ronaldo may also miss Juvetus’ Italian Serie A game against Crotone on Saturday and their UEFA Champions League group stage opening game against Dynamo Kiev next Tuesday.
  • Cristiano Ronaldo, who also plays for Italian club Juventus is “doing well, without symptoms, and in isolation,” the official statement added.
  • The rest of the Portugal squad were also tested on Tuesday and all returned negative results and will be available for Wednesday’s clash in Lisbon.

Last month, the 35-year-old Ronaldo was just the second male soccer player to score 100 goals for the national team, after former Iranian striker Ali Daei.

The federation said that Ronaldo ‘s results led to another round of tests for the rest of the Portuguese team. It said that everyone else in the team was screened negative.

Tuesday’s practice session was switched from morning to afternoon, so it was time for all the results to come back.

Two other Portuguese players, José Fonte and Anthony Lopes, recently tested positive for COVID-19.

Portugal’s coach Fernando Santos said last week that the good results among the players were “everywhere in the world.”

“We are the most tested people and we have the guarantee that everyone who will be traveling to France with us are negative,” Santos said before the match against France.

Portugal and France are leading Group 3 with seven points each in three matches.

The Portuguese Federation did not immediately disclose information as to where Ronaldo was in isolation, or how long he would remain there.

He will miss the Juventus Series A game at Crotone on Saturday and the opening of the Champions League team at Dynamo Kyiv on Tuesday. And depending on his condition and the outcome of potential tests, he may also miss the much awaited match against Barcelona on Oct. 28.

After positive tests, Juventus had been in isolation for two members of the club. There has been some debate that Ronaldo and six other players have been allowed to leave the isolated community and join their national teams.

The 35-year-old is coming out of a frustrating Champions League campaign, where he saw his side fall short of Lyon in the 16th round of the Champions League, when the season resumed back in August. He’s already off to a flying start in the Italian league with three goals and one assist in two matches.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has just become the second player ever on the men’s side to score more than 100 goals for their national team. Ronaldo, who has five Champions League titles in his name, holds the record for the most goals (130) and assists (40) in the history of the Champions League.
