House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Tuesday endorsed President Donald Trump’s demand to increase coronavirus relief checks for the American people to $2,000. Here are the developing stories:

House GOP says Nancy Pelosi can’t get unanimous vote on $2K stimulus checks

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) told fellow Republicans that Nancy Pelosi won’t succeed in her bid for unanimous consent to pass $2,000 COVID-19 stimulus checks on Thursday, New York Post reported.

Pelosi’s proposed Christmas Eve vote would follow President Trump’s refusal Tuesday to sign a $2.3 trillion pandemic stimulus and government funding bill, saying its $600 stimulus checks should be $2,000. President Trump also objected to extraneous funding, including billions in foreign aid.

“House Democrats appear to be suffering from selective hearing,” McCarthy wrote in a Wednesday night letter to House Republicans.

“They have conveniently ignored the concerns expressed by the President, and shared by our constituents, that we ought to reexamine how our tax dollars are spent overseas while so many of our neighbors at home are struggling to make ends meet.”

“Republicans will offer a unanimous consent request to revisit the State and Foreign Operations title of the Omnibus so that we can fully address the concerns at hand,” McCarthy wrote. “It will be up to Speaker Pelosi to decide if she wants to act on behalf of the American people.”

It was a trick by Nancy Pelosi to make sure it failed?

The Gateway Pundit reported: “All she needed was one objection in a voice vote to ensure it failed. She got it. She could have called in the entire House to vote but she didn’t. Because she only knows how to play politics and punish Americans.”

A opinion is posted on Twitter:

“Pelosi KNEW using unanimous consent meant a SINGLE objection from ANYONE in the house would mean the new bill for $2,000 checks WOULD NOT PASS before Christmas.. she KNEW… I am so fucking disgusted! She could’ve summoned the house back & used the roll call vote to make it pass.

But no, she cared about making herself look good knowing damn well republicans (who hold a MINORITY IN THE HOUSE!!!) would object!!!!! Now, Americans will have to wait until December 28th for any chance of relief…”

Nancy Pelosi and Schumer agree to Trump’s demand for $2,000 stimulus checks

Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) signaled that they are open to increasing the amount for the stimulus checks after President Donald Trump threatened to veto the COVID relief bill.

“Republicans repeatedly refused to say what amount the President wanted for direct checks. At last, the President has agreed to $2,000—Democrats are ready to bring this to the Floor this week by unanimous consent. Let’s do it!” Pelosi wrote on Twitter on Tuesday.

“We spent months trying to secure $2,000 checks but Republicans blocked it. Trump needs to sign the bill to help people and keep the government open and we’re glad to pass more aid Americans need. Maybe Trump can finally make himself useful and get Republicans not to block it again,” Schumer wrote on Twitter shortly after Pelosi issued her message.

President Trump warns to veto the bill

In a video message issued earlier on Tuesday, the president threatened to veto the $2.3 trillion omnibus spending and pandemic relief bill.

“Congress found plenty of money for foreign countries, lobbyists, and special interests,” the president said, “while sending the bare minimum to the American people who need it,” The Epoch Times reported.

“It wasn’t their fault. It was China’s fault.”

The president said he would also veto the bill because stimulus payments are being doled out to “illegal aliens” and their families.

“Despite all of this wasteful spending, the $900 billion package provides hardworking taxpayers only $600 [to Americans] in relief payments,” he said, arguing that not enough cash is being provided to small business owners who have suffered during the pandemic induced lockdowns.

Nancy Pelosi suggest Christmas Eve bill to approve $2,000 COVID-19 direct relief checks

On Wednesday morning, Pelosi sent a letter to Democratic colleagues explaining how they could amend the bill to increase direct payments from $600 to $2,000 per person.

“Democrats would go to the Floor and ask for Unanimous Consent to bring up a standalone bill to increase the payments. To do so requires the agreement of the Republican Leader. This agreement is necessary in the House and in the Senate,” Pelosi wrote.

She continued: “If the President truly wants to join us in $2,000 payments, he should call upon Leader McCarthy to agree to our Unanimous Consent request,” WIVB reported.

House poised for Christmas Eve clash on stimulus checks

McCarthy will offer a competing measure on the House floor on Christmas Eve, when House Democrats plan to offer a bill that would send $2,000 stimulus checks to many people, according to Washington Examiner.

Rep. Rob Wittman, a Virginia Republican, will ask for unanimous consent on a measure that would eliminate a chunk of the spending bill that provides billions in funding to foreign countries.

McCarthy’s memo to Republicans criticized Democrats and Speaker Nancy Pelosi of “trying to use the American people as leverage to make coronavirus relief contingent on government funding.”

Nancy Pelosi is hoping to trap the GOP into approving by a quick unanimous consent vote a measure to provide $2,000 stimulus checks.
