U.S. House of Representatives Louisana Republican Rep.-elect Luke Letlow died of coronavirus at the age of 41, according to many sources.
Luke Letlow announced Dec. 18 that he tested positive for COVID-19 and he was in an intensive care unit at Ochsner LSU Health in Shreveport, La.
Dr. G.E. Ghali, of LSU Health Shreveport, told NOLA.com that Luke Letlow was in critical condition but showed signs of improvement. He “apparently suffered a cardiac event this evening that was refractory to all resuscitation efforts.”
“Congressman-elect Luke Letlow, 41, passed away this evening at Ochsner-LSU Health Shreveport due to complications from COVID-19. Letlow was admitted into a Monroe Hospital on December 19 after testing positive for the coronavirus and was transferred to Ochsner-LSU Health on Tuesday, December 22, and placed in intensive care,” Letlows campaign manager said in a statement to WDSU.
“Letlow is survived by his wife, Julia Barnhill Letlow, Phd., and two young children. The family appreciates the numerous prayers and support over the past days but asks for privacy during this difficult and unexpected time. A statement from the family along with funeral arrangements will be announced at a later time,” the statement continued.
Luke Letlow won his first race for Congress after defeating three-term state Rep. Lance Harris, according to the News-Star.
Luke Letlow was scheduled to be sworn to Congress on Sunday. He is the first elected representative to die from COVID-19, according to New York Post.

Condolences to Luke Letlow’s family
Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards extended his condolences to Letlow’s family and said that on the day of the Congressman’s funeral, which would be announced at a later date, he had directed flags to be flown to half-staff.
“COVID-19 has taken Congressman-elect Letlow from us far too soon. I am heartbroken that he will not be able to serve our people as a U.S. Representative, but I am even more devastated for his loving family,” Edwards said in a statement.
Rep. Steve Scalise, another Republican from the state, issued a statement calling Letlowa “positive spirit” who had a “tremendously bright future ahead of him.”
“Incredibly sad news. My thoughts are with Rep-elect Letlow’s family and his entire Louisiana community during this time,” Rep. Nanette D. Barragán (D-Calif.) wrote on Twitter. “He was only 41 & was set to be sworn into Congress on Sunday.”
“A tragic day for the House of Representatives. My prayers and condolences go to Congressman-elect Luke Letlow’s family and friends,” Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas) wrote on Twitter.
“Devastated to hear of my friend Congressman-elect Luke Letlow’s passing. Luke had such a positive spirit and a tremendously bright future,” Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) wrote on Twitter.
“Absolutely heartbreaking,” Rep. Jody Hice (R-Ga.) wrote on Twitter. “My wife Dee Dee and I ask for millions of Americans to join us in prayers for this dear family.”
“My deepest and heartfelt condolences go out to the family of Congressman-elect Luke Letlow, a promising young lawmaker whose voice was cruelly silenced by this brutal pandemic,” Rep. Robin Kelly (D-Ill.) wrote on Twitter.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and his district. May God give peace to his loved ones in this time of great sorrow,” Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) wrote on Twitter.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, Luke Letlow’s wife Julia had thanked the public for their “continued prayers and well wishes” as her husband continued to battle the illness.
“We thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for the outpouring of support we have received and feel truly blessed to be touched by the prayers of so many,” she wrote.
