A group of House Republicans, led by Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), say they are ready to take legislative action against Department of Homeland Security (DHS) if the agency hides data on the number of coronavirus-positive illegal aliens released into the United States.
In a letter to DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, the House Republicans call his leadership a “lackluster performance” and credit Biden’s “weak border policies” for “appalling” illegal immigration totals – nearly 200,000 border crossers were encountered by federal immigration officials in June.
“The June numbers put the United States at over 1 million encounters in just the first 7 months of this fiscal year,” they write:
With continued complicity from the Biden Administration, the United States is once again slated to see another massive increase in southern border encounters. For the month of July – reporting indicates another approximate 210,000 illegal migrant encounters – this will be the highest monthly total in the history of DHS.
The House Republicans then slam Mayorkas for what they call the Department of Homeland Security’s “dangerously irresponsible” lack of transparency about the number of border crossers and illegal aliens who have tested positive for coronavirus and have been released into the United States’ interior.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported a whopping 188,829 southwest land border encounters for the month of June. A court filing last week noted that according to preliminary data, CBP probably encountered around 210,000 people in July.
The House Republicans are requesting a slew of data on illegal immigration totals by September 6. Otherwise, they say they’ll use legislation to force DHS to respond to their questions by introducing a resolution of inquiry.
“The American people and migrants seeking to come here deserve better than the chaos of a wide-open border,” they write. “Without such a foundational mechanism as enforcement of the rule of law, you cannot begin to uphold the words of DHS’s mission.”
The House Republicans specifically want a breakdown of the number of illegal border crossers who have tested positive for coronavirus since January 20 and were released from DHS custody into the US interior while still coronavirus-positive, as well as a total of how many have received a coronavirus vaccine after crossing the border.
The House Republicans also want to know the final destinations of border crossers released from DHS custody, broken down by state and county, as well as the number of border crossers apprehended since January 20 who are linked to international gangs, terrorist organizations, or drug cartels.
In particular, the House Republicans want American taxpayers to cover the costs of housing, utilities, food, education, healthcare, coronavirus testing, coronavirus vaccines, and transportation for border crossers.
