According to a report, a group of House Republicans has filed articles of impeachment against President Biden for his handling of the southern border immigration crisis and his chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Rep. Bob Gibbs (R-Ohio), who is spearheading the effort, claims Biden violated his oath of office in three articles filed on Tuesday.
”Yesterday, I filed three articles of impeachment against President Biden based on what I believe to be clear violations of his duties as president,” Gibbs said on his Facebook page.
- The first article of impeachment claims that Biden “violated his constitutional oath to faithfully execute the office of President” by failing to secure the U.S.-Mexico border and “willfully releasing thousands of migrants who entered the United States illegally without a date to appear in court for immigration.”
- In the second article, Gibbs argues that Biden violated the separation of powers by “extending the [eviction] moratorium despite the clear warnings from the U.S. Supreme Court” and without any “legislative directive from the U.S. Congress.”
- The third and final article charges that Biden “failed to act responsibly as Commander in Chief” with regard to his administration’s withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Bob Gibbs is co-sponsor of the articles along with Reps. Andy Biggs of Arizona and Brian Babin and Randy Weber of Texas.
“His willful negligence of the border crisis is a failure to maintain and defend American sovereignty. Biden’s attempts to extend a federal eviction moratorium despite the Supreme Court’s warning and his own admission that he has no power to do so is a blatant and intentional action that violates the separation of powers,” Gibbs continued.
In the articles, Gibbs claimed that Biden let thousands of migrants into the country without ordering them to appear in court for an immigration hearing on a specific date.
According to Gibbs, Biden also allowed migrants who tested positive for the coronavirus to enter the United States.
He claimed that Biden extended the eviction moratorium despite a Supreme Court ruling urging him to seek congressional approval first.
“Finally, the withdrawal from Afghanistan was not just a disaster. By pulling military personnel out before the evacuation of American civilians, President Biden shamefully left our own citizens in danger,” Gibbs said.
According to the articles, Biden “abandoned” Americans in Afghanistan by withdrawing the military first, “willfully putting their lives in danger.”
The botched pullout also left billions of dollars in US military equipment behind, which the Taliban snatched up after taking control, according to the document.
“President Biden has executed a withdrawal policy that leaves Afghanistan in the hands of a terror-supporting regime and weakens America’s ability to prosecute the Global War on Terror,” the articles say.
Gibbs filed the articles because he was prompted by Biden’s debacle in Afghanistan.
“I don’t take this step lightly. Before the Afghanistan debacle, I urged my colleagues to consider a measured, thoughtful conversation on the merits of impeachment,” the Alabama lawmaker said.
It’s the second time Republicans have filed articles of impeachment against Biden.
