Billionaire Bill Gates is interfering with mathematics teaching in schools in the United States, considering the practices involved “racist.”
Gates donated hundreds of millions of dollars to institutions that support critical race theory, the idea that U.S. political and economic institutions are inherently racist.
In this case, Gates’ money funds several organizations associated with Pathway to Equitable Math Instruction. A group of 25 educational organizations that argue asking students to show their work and find the correct answer is a sign of racism.
“A Pathway to Equitable Math Instruction is an integrated approach to mathematics that centers Black, Latinx, and Multilingual students in grades 6-8, addresses barriers to math equity, and aligns instruction to grade-level priority standards,” an introduction to the group’s website reads. “The Pathway offers guidance and resources for educators to use now as they plan their curriculum, while also offering opportunities for ongoing self-reflection as they seek to develop an anti-racist math practice. The toolkit ‘strides’ serve as multiple on-ramps for educators as they navigate the individual and collective journey from equity to anti-racism.”
They also argue that the “concept that mathematics is purely objective” is “unequivocally false” and that focusing on the “right answer” to math equations is an example of white supremacy.
These teaching changes specifically target black, Latino, and multilingual students in grades 6, 7, and 8.
The initiative comes as a response to the country’s protests and riots last year, which accused U.S. society of racism.
The Pathway published five guidelines to help secondary school teachers detect when students use “white supremacist practices” that allegedly cause student “underachievement.”
School districts and state departments of education across the country plan to implement The Pathway guidelines in their institutions.
The program sets monthly goals. In November, educators must review how they “authentically” include minority and multilingual students in math class. In May, teachers will evaluate how they “dismantle power structures in the classroom.”
However, this approach to education is not limited to mathematics; for example, the North Carolina Board of Education approved a history curriculum that will teach second-graders “how diverse indigenous, religious, gender, and racial groups advocate for freedom and equality.”
Likewise, fourth graders will learn how “revolution, reform, and resistance” shaped the state.
Radio talk show host Jason Rantz said, ” … If your child’s educators subscribe to any of the beliefs in these texts, you should pull them immediately.
“These resources help educators rid their classrooms of the plague of racist math by making their students dumber.”
On the other hand, it would lead to disorder by promoting the idea that raising one’s hand to intervene in class is also evidence of white supremacy.
Rantz says of The Pathway process, “… requiring students to raise their hands before speaking can reinforce paternalism and power-grabbing, as well as break down the thinking, learning, and communication process.”
It is unclear why the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation funds these kinds of controversial radical theories, in addition to the numerous projects in which they also act as specialists.
For political scientist Carol M. Swain, particular curricula “proposed by Black Lives Matter and being adopted in too many places are really destructive to the black community and the black family and racial justice,” she told Fox News’ Laura Ingraham.
Bill Gates Foundation behind effort to end white supremacy in math instruction
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is the only donor listed on a website for a group dedicated to eliminating racism from the nation’s math curriculum, which would be accomplished, in part, by eliminating the need for students to show their work after solving a math problem.
“White supremacy culture infiltrates math classrooms in everyday teacher actions,” the lesson says. “Coupled with the beliefs that underlie these actions, they perpetuate educational harm on Black, Latinx, and multilingual students, denying them full access to the world of mathematics.”
“We also wish to thank the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for their generous financial support of this project,” the website says.
