What this tool is for

Context changes what a headline means.

How to use it

The image log preserves the provenance trail around a visual. Record where you found it, the claimed date and place, the earliest matching use, visible location clues, whether a longer video exists, and any reliable provenance or metadata information.

What it does not prove

A missing metadata field is not proof of fakery, and a visually convincing match is not proof that the caption is correct. The log keeps image authenticity, event identity and caption accuracy as separate questions.

When to escalate

Use the log when an image is likely to resurface. Old disaster photos, protest footage and military imagery are frequently recycled with new locations or dates; a saved earlier-use reference lets you resolve the next appearance quickly.
